PC Detect^sm is a novel blood test used to screen men to determine the likelihood that they have prostate cancer. Men with prostate cancer have higher serum HAAH levels than men without prostate cancer. PC Detect^sm provides the physician with additional information about the likelihood that a man with an abnormally high PSA value (PSA > 4ng/ml), with or without an abnormal DRE, may have prostate cancer. It is helpful, therefore, to the physician to determine the need for prostate biopsy in such patients. Importantly, high serum HAAH levels are also seen in men who have normal PSA values (PSA < 4ng/ml) and normal DREs; prostate cancer is often not diagnosed in this population despite the facts that it is fairly common and often pathologically high-grade. A high serum HAAH level demonstrated by PC Detect^sm in this often under-diagnosed population should alert the physician to consider biopsy.
